The humpy is one the best flies made for fishing turbulent water. With its buoyant back and wing and dense hackle, this fly looks buggy, floats like a cork and its light color is easy to see even from a distance. The Humpy will even pop up to the surface if submerged.

Even though this fly does not imitate any specific insect, it is a suggestive fly that looks like so many of the insects a trout eats. It can be taken for many of the darker mayflies, yellow mayflies, caddisflies, golden stoneflies, and grasshoppers.

This fly is a favorite with serious western trout fishermen and is fast catching on with many eastern fishermen. Lefty Kreh said he would never go fishing anywhere in Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, or Europe unless he had a few Humpys in his box.

Humpies are tied in a variety of colors. The most useful of them is the Royal Humpy, originated by Jack Dennis out of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The added advantage of the white wing makes it even easier to see than the standard Humpy. This fly is deadly and is the first fly I go to when looking through my Humpy box. The Chartreuse Humpy was developed because the fish where I was spending a lot of time one summer could only be taken on a chartreuse color. I love chartreuse! I have found since then that the fly works equally well in rivers and streams wherever I go. I have found that sometimes fish will clobber a fly they have never seen before and be somewhat timid if they are fished heavily with the more common assortments.

Don't wait for a hatch to fish this fly. Even if you don't see insects on the water, you should float this one and be ready for a strike. Attaching a length of tippet material and a nymph to the hook bend will make the Humpy pull double duty as a strike indicator.

Tip: The natural elasticity built into each one of our furled leaders will protect your tippet from breaking and increase your chances of landing the fish of a lifetime (click on the link below to purchase).
